The Kerala Backwaters (South India)

The Kerala backwaters are just plain amazing--so amazing that they'll almost make you forget how hot it is outside. It's not just the scenery that's impressive. The people here (and throughout Kerala) are some of the friendliest I've ever met.

Here is one person in particular:

Manilal was my boatman/guide on the backwaters. He brought me to his house for breakfast and tea. He lives in a small village along the backwaters, and there is ONE wire that supplies the electricity to his village. Residents are allowed two lightbulbs. Air conditioning? Forget it--and it was somewhere near 40 degrees. He and  his family seemed very content, despite their extremely modest living circumstances. I was especially amazed to see that Manilal seemed to know everyone in his community--something that many of us in the Greater Toronto Area can't exactly relate to. Also, how many people do you know who can rock an umbrella hat?
